Westerham
Brewery Co. agrees supply deal with Waitrose
The
Westerham Brewery Co. in Kent will supply two bottled beers - Little
Scotney Pale Ale and British Bulldog - to 13 Waitrose stores in
the south east of England. These high quality beers will be available
from August as part of the Waitrose locally produced initiative
(see www.waitrose.com/sourcing). They will be stocked in its branches
at Banstead, Biggin Hill, Caterham, Coulsdon, Dartford, Dorking,
Epsom, Esher, Longfield, Paddock Wood, Sanderstead, Sevenoaks and
Tonbridge.
Little
Scotney Pale Ale (4.0% abv) was initially brewed exclusively
for the National Trust. This refreshing blonde beer uses Wye Target
hops from the Trust’s only hop garden at Scotney Castle in
Lamberhurst, Kent. Westerham Brewery coaxes all the best flavours
and aromas of Ian Strang’s Target hops using late hopping
and dry hopping techniques. A contribution from the sale of each
bottle of beer is reinvested in the hop enterprise to keep a dying
tradition of hop growing in Kent alive.
British
Bulldog (4.3% abv) is a bottle conditioned best bitter
brewed to commemorate Winston Churchill, whose country retreat Chartwell
is in Westerham. British Bulldog is brewed with crystal malt for
a deep mahogany hue, a rich malty palate and WGV hops from Goudhurst
in Kent for a lingering, hoppy finish. As a cask conditioned beer,
British Bulldog won the Gold Medal in its class at the Society of
Independent Brewers’ southeast Beer Competition in 2005.
Robert
Wicks, Manager Director and Founder of Westerham Brewery Co, says,
“Supplying locally produced beers to Waitrose fits in with
the Westerham Brewery’s ethos of supplying local products
to a local market. The traceability of the ingredients, water, malt,
hops and yeast gives consumers the added confidence in the provenance
of the beer they are drinking.”
