Our Beers

Regular Beers

Finchcocks Original ® 3.5%
A session beer made using hops exclusively from the Finchcocks hop garden in Kent. Tasting notes by Adrian Tierney-Jones, author of the Big Book of Beer: Mid-gold session beer with hints of the Burton snatch on the nose (think struck matches), while wisps of citrus fruit float around in the background. The palate sings with citrus notes, a hint of resiny hoppiness as well as a crunchy biscuitiness that comes from the malt. The finish boasts more bitterness before a fade-out of grain dryness that reminds the drinker of the beer’s grainy origins. A powerfully flavoursome beer for such a low abv.
Gold Medal SIBA SE 2006, Silver Medal SIBA SE 2008

Grasshopper Kentish Bitter ® 3.8%
A dark, malty bitter with nutty, roasted notes from the chocolate malt. This session bitter is hopped with Kent Target hops from the National Trust's hop farm at Scotney Castle and Finchcocks' Kent Goldings. A satisfying and flavoursome pint. Silver Medal SIBA SE 2006
"...a deep, peppery hop character from the East Kent Goldings and Target hops." - Roger Protz

Special Pale Ale - SPA 3.8% - Oct - Apr
Originally brewed for 5 years as "Black Eagle SPA", this beer has been re-launched as "SPA" following a legal challenge to our Trade Mark by Wells and Youngs Brewery. Unable to afford to fight our corner we have withdrawn the Trade Mark despite there being no evidence of confusion between "Eagle IPA" and "Black Eagle SPA". A hoppy, citrus flavoured golden ale made with First Gold and Cascade hops. With all that flavour in the glass how could anybody be confused?

Summer Perle Golden Ale ® 3.8% - May - Sep
Summer Perle was originally brewed in 2004 to commemorate the 30th (Pearl!) Anniversary of the Canterbury Beer Festival, Kent's biggest real ale festival. It was a huge success. It was the fastest selling beer at the Maidstone Beer Festival and was delivered to several other beer festivals by special request. It has now been added to the range as our summer seasonal. This golden ale is dry hopped with Hallertauer Perle hops which impart a spicy and refreshing finish to this summer ale. Fastest Selling Beer at the Great British beer Festival New Breweries Bar 2005, Finalist Tesco Drinks Awards 2006, Bronze Medal SIBA SE 2008

British Bulldog “BB” ® 4.3% Best Bitter
A rich, full bodied best bitter in the traditional Kent style. Finest Maris Otter pale ale malt and crystal malt for colour and richness. Hopped with local Kent Northdown and Finchcocks' Whitbread Golding Variety hops for a full flavour and aroma. Also available in bottles. Gold Medal Best Bitter SIBA SE 2005

"That's a fighting beer, isn't it! Malty n' hoppy. That just tastes like a nice, strong, manly beer. It's a good beer. Can I have some more please, sir? That's a right good pint; it's a proper beer, it's honest, it's a pint" - James May - Oz & James Drink to Britain February 2009

"...massive aroma and palate of jammy fruit, biscuity malt and bitter hop resins. Good old-fashioned beer." - Roger Protz

"...this deeply satisfying brew has a wonderful malty aroma and a bitter hop finish. A fine session beer, or try it with smoked mackerel salad or cold roasts" - Jonathan Ray - Daily Telegraph 14 October 2006

"A satisfying, hoppy best bitter in the great British tradition, with a smooth malt backdrop and lots of tangy, tart, orangey fruit." - Jeff Evans - Beer Writer

William Wilberforce Freedom Ale ® 4.3% FAIRTRADE BEER
Produced for Fairtrade Fortnight 2007 and to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act on 25th March, 1807. It is characterised by its mellow bitterness and long hoppy finish. Beer of the month - May 2007 - Roger Protz & Tom Cannavan; Gold Medal Bottled Beer SIBA SE Beer Competition 2007; Silver Medal SIBA National Champion Bottled Beer

Special Bitter Ale “1965” ® 4.8 - 5%
An ale to commemorate the year 1965 when the Black Eagle Brewery closed, Winston Churchill passed away and Robert Wicks was born. Brewed to a similar recipe that Bill Wickett used for his last brew at the old brewery on 3rd March 1965. Kent Northdown hops give a clean, refreshing full bodied flavour for which English ales are famous. Finchcocks' Kent Goldings for flavour and aroma. Bronze Medal SIBA SE 2007

Occasional Beers

India Pale Ale - Every 100 Brews 4.8%
A traditional IPA brewed in the old style with only Maris Otter Pale Ale Malt. It is a deep golden ale with a thirst quenching bitterness. This IPA is hopped with Target hops and Progress hops from the National Trust's hop garden at Scotney Castle.
"...puts to shame some of the lacklustre beers of modest strength that masquerade as IPA. This sumptuous beer has plum jam and blackcurrant aroma and palate from the Bramling Cross hops, balanced by sappy malt and a long, lingering bitter, fruity and quenching finish." - Roger Protz

Sevenoaks Bitter “7X” 4.8%
A traditional bitter made with Maris Otter Pale Ale Malt, Amber Malt for a dry, biscuity edge and Crystal Malt for richness. Hopped with Finchcocks' Kent Goldings for a smooth, traditional English aroma that produces the classic Golding finish.
"...the complex beer has a fresh tobacco and spicy and peppery hops aroma, with sultana fruit in the mouth and a long hoppy and bitter finish." "Beer to die for!" - Roger Protz

Seasonal Beers

Little Scotney Green Hop Harvest Ale 4.3% - Oct / Nov
Brewed in September to celebrate the hop harvest, this best bitter is hopped with undried green Target hops from the National Trust's hop garden at Scotney Castle. A mild tasting, mid gold best bitter, it has a wonderful sappy flavour of the undried green hops.

General Wolfe "1759" Maple Ale 4.3% - Autumn
Our Autumn seasonal ale is the colour of turning maple leaves from the 13% Crystal Malt in the grist. In addition we add Maple Syrup to the copper. The brew is hopped with Bramling Cross hops which are a cross between an English Golding hop and a Manitoban (Canadian) wild hop. Brewed by our Canadian brewer, Anthony Richardson to commemorate General Wolfe who was born in Westerham and defeated the French at the Heights of Abraham in Quebec.
A firmly bitter but decidedly fruity, robust ale with toffee-malt notes, juicy blackcurrants and orchard fruits, plus a perfumed, floral background sweetness from the maple syrup. - Jeff Evans - Beer Writer

God's Wallop Christmas FAIRTRADE Ale ® 4.3% - Christmas
A traditional Old Ale style beer made with FAIRTRADE Demerara sugar from Malawi, pale ale, amber and dark crystal malts and 5 types of Kent hops. The beer has a delicious fruity note and complex hop flavours lingering on the palate. 10% of the sales proceeds will go to charity, in keeping with the ethos of the Westerham Brewery Company.
Puddledock Porter 4.3% - Winter
A traditional dark brown winter ale brewed with Crystal and Chocolate Malts, hopped with Kent Northdown, Bramling Cross and Goldings hops for flavour and aroma.
Our ‘Puddledock Porter’ takes its name from the village of Puddledock and its association with Westerham’s famous resident, Winston Churchill. The possibility of Churchill’s receiving a dukedom after the war led to speculation about what his son would be known as. After discussions with Churchill, his private secretary reported that Churchill would never accept: “First of all what could he be Duke of? Secondly, even if he were Duke of Westerham, what would Randolph be? He could only be Marquis of Puddledock Lane which was the only other possession he had apart from Chartwell. And thirdly, quite seriously, he wished to die in the House of Commons as Winston Churchill.”

50 Best Beers - The Independent - 30 November 2007

The pale bronze beer is complex, from aroma through to finish. The use of Demerara sugar adds a fruitness reminiscent of pear drops and sherbet lemons to the nose, dominated by biscuity malt and hop resins. Tart fruit, juicy malt and bitter hops fill the mouth while the long finish is dry and intensely bitter, with rich malt, lemon fruit and spicy hops. Malt: medium. Fruit: high. Bitterness: high. - Roger Protz

Viceroy India Pale Ale 5.0% - Bottle Conditioned Beer
This is the first National Trust brand beer using malt and hops from National Trust sources. The malt is organically grown Westminster pale ale malt and the hops are Target and Progress grown in organic conversion at Scotney Castle. The inspiration behind this beer, the Marquis Curzon of Kedleston, was a figure of enormous importance. While Viceroy of India he restored the Taj Mahal. On his return to England he restored Tattershall Castle in 1911 and Bodiam Castle in 1916, both of which he left to the Trust. In his memoirs he wrote about a journey on horseback in India where he dreamt of drinking a beer: "At that moment I would have given a kingdom, not for champagne or hock and soda, or hot coffee but for a glass of beer". This is a true India Pale Ale brewed with lots of hops to produce a golden ale, hoppy and bitter.
